George Washington A commander of the Continental Army that led on to be the first president.
Mercenary A professional soldier hired to fight for a foreign country.
Strategy An overall plan of action or attack.
Rendezvous A formal meeting.
Battles of Saratoga Burgoyne's army was surrounded by the Continental Army, and was forced to surrender.
Marquis De Lefayette A 19 year old French nobleman who volunteered to serve in the Continental Army.
Bayonet Long steel knives attached to the ends of rifles.
Desert To leave your military duty with intention of coming back.
Privateer A privately owned ship that a wartime government gives permission to attack.
James Forten The son of a free African-American that signed up to sail on the Royal Louis.
John Paul Jones Won the most famous sea battle. Had the phrase, "I have not yet begun to fight!"
Lord Cornwallis A british general that led an army.
Guerillas Small bands of fighters who weaken the enemy with surprise attack, and hit & run tactics.
Pacifist A person that is opposed to fighting.
Battle of Yorktown American & French troops bombarded Yorktown with cannon fire turning it's buildings to rubble.
The treaty of Paris (1783) A treaty that offically ended the revolutionary war.
Republicanism An idea that stated that instead of being ruled by a king, it's ruled by the people.
Elizabeth Freeman A black woman who was sued for her freedom in a Massachusetts court & won.
Richard Allen A preacher who helped start th free African-American society.
Ally A country that helps another country achieve a common goal or victory.
