What are the five dimensions of educational politics that influence teachers? Political Pressure from federal, state, & local levels; Conflicting beliefs about what should be taught & how; Competition for educational resources; Changing legal rights & responsibilities of teachers; push for higher standards, testing, accountability
What gives the states' legal authority over public education? 10th Amendment of the Constitution which gives states power not specifically given to the federal government
What is a school board? acts as a state agent responsible for approving teachers, administrators, and other school staff hired, developing educational & organizational policies, and dtermining the procedures for evaluating programs & personnel.
Under the school board, who is the leader of a school system? Superintendent
What is the role of state government in public education? The legislature, governor, state courts, state board of education
What is a state takeover? The state government intervenes in the running of por performing schools and districts
What are the responsibilities of state departments of education? Teacher certification, Distribution of Federal & state money to schools, Reports on the quality/status of education,Make sure/Compliance of state & federal education guidelines, accredit schools, monitoring of student safety ;improve education projects
How does the federal government impact education? Influence moral vision for schools, provide aid to schools, regulate schools,fund educational research
What are some federal laws impacting education? No Child Left Behind Act, Blueprint for Reform:Reauthorization of the Elementary & Secondary Education Act of 2010
What are the provisions in Blueprint for Reform:Reauthorization of the Elementary & Secondary Education Act of 2010? Improving teacher & principal effectiveness, providing info to families to evaluate schools, implementing career & college ready standards, and improving student learning in lower performing schools

What is Head Start? Federally funded program providing pre-school to lower income children.
What is vertical funding? Funding to schools that have greater needs based on student populations--limited English speaking, special education, etc...
School Choice The concept of allowing parents to select their child's school; attempts to provide equity to good schools & resources
Voucher system Parent given a voucher to pay for child's education at the school of their choice
What are charter schools? independent, innovative, outcome based public schools.
