| Samuel Gompers | Labor leader who used business methods to organize and negotiate fair labor. He was an immigrant who supported workers in forming unions. |
| industrialization | growth of factories and cities |
| tenement | an apartment house where many poor immigrants lived. A run-down apartment, often over crowded, in a poor section in the city. |
