QuestionAnswer
What is the electoral college? A group of people chosen by each state who vote for president and vice president.
How does the electoral college elect a new president? The people in the electoral college vote for the president or vice president.
What is the President's cabinet? A group of people formed from the heads of the departments of the executive branch.
What is the Cabinet's job? They helped President Washington make decisions.
What is a political party? A group of people who share a view of what government should be and what it should do?
What were the first 2 political parties? The Federalists and Democratic Republicans
What did each political party believe in? Federalists were in favor of a strong active federal government. Democratic-republicans favored a weaker, less active federal government.
Who designed Washington DC? Pierre L'Enfant
Which president was the first to live in the White House? John Adams
What did President Jefferson believe the government should do? He wanted to give the government back to the people by keeping the power in their hands.
How did Jefferson try to accomplish the task of making government be in the power of the people? He got congress to lower taxes and he reduced the size of government and the armed forces.
Who were pioneers? The early settlers that had crossed the Appalachian mountains.
What is the frontier? The edge of settlements.
What was life like for pioneers? Give details. It was a hard life. Had to do everything by hand. Had to keep moving westward. Closest neighbor miles away.
Who was Daniel Boone? He was a well known early pioneer. He was a skilled woodsman who lead many pioneers to the land west of the Appalachian Mountains. In this way he helped the United States grow westward.
What was the Louisiana Purchase? A purchase that James Monroe made in Paris France. He went to try to buy New Orleans offering France $2 million for it. However, France was in a war with Britain and offered all of the Louisiana Territory for $15 million. James Monroe took the deal.
What did the Louisiana Purchase do for the United States? By doing this it doubled the size of our nation.
Describe Louis and Clark's expedition west. One of their goals was to see if they could find an all water route to the Pacific ocean but they didn't. Some Indians helped, some didn't. Pay attention to soil for farming. Make relationships with Indians.
Why did the United States go to war with Britain again? They wanted to stop British attacks on American ships, They also wanted to stop Britain from supporting attacks on settlers on the Northwestern frontier.
What is the Battle of Tippecanoe? Why was it important to the United States? A battle between the US and TEcumseh (leader of an Indian Tribe) this battle was supposed to be a great victory for the Indians but it was seen as a victory for the US. It weakened Tecumseh who was trying to keep pioneers from settling their land.
What was the War of 1812 known for? It is remembered for dramatic battles at sea.
Who are the War Hawks? This was a group in Congress that pressed for War against Britain in 1812.
Who wrote the Star Spangled Banner? What inspired him to write the song? Francis Scott Key and he was inspired by the events at the Battle of Fort McHenry (part of the War of 1812)
What happened in the Battle of New Orleans? Andrew Jackson, an American General fought the British. It was a bloody battle and lots of men died. The US won the battle however neither side knew that a treaty ending the war had already been signed 2 weeks before but hadn't reached them yet.
What was the outcome of the War of 1812? What does it show the world about the US? It did not have a huge impact since Britain and France had stopped fighting earlier and no longer interfered with American ships. However, it did show the world that the US intended to defend itself at sea or on land.
List the First 4 presidents of the US in order. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison
