QuestionAnswer
What difficulties did immigrants face in the United States? Finding a job so they can get into the country, unsanitary boat ride, and harsh inspections followed by discrimination, job shortage, and horrible living conditions in the US.
What problems did rapid growth pose for cities? Housing shortages, bad living conditions, poor sanitation, outdated transportaion system, unsafe water, crime and fire hazards.
Why were immigrants such strong supporters of political machines? Most of the bosses were first or second generation immigrants who can speak thier native language and relate to the immigrant voters' problems. The machine would help to obtain full citizenship in return for votes.
What problems did the patronage system create? Unqualified workers in important positions and potential for appointees to use their position for personal gain.
Why did businesses support high tariffs? Because they discouraged consumption of foreign goods, increasing domestic business.
