| Black codes | Laws passed by southern states during Andrew Johnson's presidency. They restricted freed slaves basic rights, such as voting, sitting on juries, the right to testify against white men, carry weapons in public places and working in certain occupations. |
| Freedmen’s Bureau | A U.S. federal government agency that aided distressed freedmen (freed slaves) in 1865–1869, during the Reconstruction era of the United States. |
| Civil rights | Rights to personal liberty (freedom) established by the 13th and 14th Amendments of the U.S. constitution, especially as applied to individuals or minorities. |
| 14th Amendment | In 1866, this amendment was passed that gave blacks citizenship in America. |
| Freedmen's schools | Schools that were established in the south by northern missionaries to help educate freed blacks. |
| Sharecropping | A system of farming that developed in the South after the Civil War, when landowners, many of whom formerly owned slaves, lacked the cash to pay wages to farm laborers, whom used to be slaves. |
| Ku Klux Klan | A secret organization in the South following the civil war, which aimed to suppress the newly acquired civil rights of blacks. |

| 15th Amendment | Passed in 1870 that granted African American men the right to vote. |
