QuestionAnswer
The Restoration On May 8, 1660, Charles II, the eldest son of Charles I, became King of England. This event is known today as The Restoration, and it had a major impact on the eventual settlement of South Carolina.
Lords Proprietors The eight men were wealthy and influential and held titles that were honorary or political. Most of them were members of the Council for Foreign Plantations. These men called themselves the Lords Proprietors.
Quitrent The Lords Proprietors would be able to collect a quitrent, an annual rent on the land the settlers paid generation after generation.

Immigrant An immigrant is one who moves to a new colony or country to settle there.
Governor A person that is the head of the new colony

Naval Stores A third economic venture also required the strength and knowledge of the Africans. Pine trees in the colony’s vast forests were a source of pitch and tar—the naval stores needed by the English navy to make ships watertight.

Faction A faction is a small, united group within a larger group.
Dissenters Dissenters—Protestants who were not Anglicans—moved into the colony.
Status Quo The Goose Creek men were determined to preserve the status quo; that is, they wanted to keep things the way they were. They wanted to avoid paying quitrents but continue to trade with the Indians
Compromise A compromise is a way to settle disagreements in which each side gives way a little in its demands.
Established Church Many of the Dissenters feared the Assembly would make the Anglican Church the official or established church of South Carolina.
Parish The 1706 Church Act was important because it restored equality. It was also important because it divided the colony into ten parishes, or church districts.
Militia On that date the South Carolina militia, the citizen army, defeated the Indians.
