What is the Land Bridge Theory? The land bridge theory is the theory that during the ice age, low sea levels exposed a strip of land between Siberia and what is now Alaska. People crossed this land to get to the Americas.
What were some Native American beliefs? Respect for nature; The world was full of powerful unseen forces and spirits; they honored spirits; balance between people and nature.
How did Native Americans adapt to their environment? Give 2 examples. By building shelters from where they lived; People became nomadic where climates were harsh and resources were limited. Inregions with good climates and resources, people settled and stayed longer.
What is irrigation? Irrigation is when you bring water to dry land.
Why was irrigation used? Irrigation was used so people could stay in one place for a while and farm.
Which civilization was the oldest? The Olmec Civilization
Name 3 accomplishments of the Aztecs. Powerful empire; built a capital of Tenochtitlan; built causeways; built temples
Name 2 contributions of the Mayas 365 day calendar; system of numbers including the concept of zero; temples; social class; astronomy.
Name 2 contribututions of the Incas the quipo-a device used for keeping track of quantities; engineering; terraces, runners
How did the American Southwest Indians adapt to life in a dry desert? They adapted to life by building irrigation ditches so they could farm.
How did the Anasazi build shelters? The Anasazi built shelter using stone and adobe cliffs
What religious customs did the Pueblos have? Polytheistic; they honored the sky, earth, and water spirits. They had masked dancers that stood for the Kachinas
Who were the Mound Builders and where did they live? The Mound Builders were a farming culture in North America that built large earth mounds for religious ceremonies. They lived in the eastern half of the United States.
What is a potlatch? A 3 day ceremonial dinner to show off your wealth.
What are kachinas? Spirits who represented masked native american dancers. They bring good luck for harvest
What type of shelter did the Eastern Woodland Iroquois build? They built long houses for 12 or more family members. They used trees.
What was the purpose of the League of Iroquois? To end all the fighting between all the tribes
What did the League of Iroquois accomplish? An alliance was accomplished by the League of the Iroquois.
Who were the sachems? Sachems were tribal leaders
Who chose the sachems? Women in the tribe chose the sachems.
What was the role of women in Iroquois society? Women owned land; political power; charge of planting and harvesting; removed sachems; when women married, men took her last name.
What is an extended family? An extended family are generations of family
What is a missionary? A missionary is a person sent to spread religious faith
What is an adobe? Adobe is sundried bricks.
what is a quipu? A quipu is a cord or string with knots that stood for quantities and messages.
What is a kachina? Spirits that represented masked native dancers
What is an archaeologist? An archaeologist is a person who discovers, collects and analyzes the material remains of past cultures.
What is culture? A way of life of people
