Boston Tea Party Boston rebels dump tea into Boston harbor to protest on tea 1773.
Indentured Servant A person who agrees to work for a period of time in return for travel expenses, food and shelter.
Jamestown First permanent English settlement in the Americas 1607.
William Penn A Quaker; established the Pennsylvania colony in keeping with Quaker ideals.
John Smith Leader of Jamestown.
Quaker A religious group that William Penn belonged to; did not defer to authority and opposed war.
Puritans Settled in New England - wanted to "purify" church from Catholic influences.
Sugar Act Trade Act in 1764 that was an attempt to reduce smuggling in the British colonies.
Middle Passage The transportation of slaves from Africa to the West Indies.
Stamp Act Law passed in 1765 that was the first direct taxation of goods and services in the North American British colonies.
Boston Massacre First clash between British and colonists in 1770.
Common Sense Widely read pamphlet written by Thomas Paine attacking King George; advocated for American independence.
Thomas Jefferson Virginia lawyer wrote Declaration of Independence.
Navigation Acts Series of laws beginning in 1651 to tighten control of trade in colones.
King Phillip's War Conflict between Native American's and New England colonists 1675 - 1676.
John Winthrop First governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Townshend Act Duties leveled on imports as they came from Britain.
John Locke Key Enlightenment thinker maintained people have natural right to life, liberty, and property.
Triangular Trade Systems of trade between Europe, Africa, West Indies and America where goods and slaves were exchanged.
Mercantilism A system by which a country increase its wealth and power by achieving a favorable balance of trade.
