Ellis Island Immigration Station in the New York Harbor. People had to be inspected, prove that they had never been convicted of a felony, demonstrate that they could work, and have some money.
Angel Island Immigration station on the West Coast in the San Francisco Bay. 50,000 Chinese immigrants were processed here between 1910-1940.
Melting Pot How America was viewed by others. It means a mixture of people of different cultures and races who blended together by abandoning their native languages and customs.
Chinese Exclusion Act 1882. Banned Chinese Immigrants from entering the country for 10 years. Banned all except teachers, students, merchants, tourists and gov't officials.
The Gentlemen's Agreement Organized by President Theodore Roosevelt, Japan agreed to limit emigration of unskilled workers in exchange for hte repeal of the San Francisco segregation order.
In 1906, what did the local board of education in San Francisco do to Japanese students? They segregated (separated) Japanese children by putting them in separate schools.
Nativism Overt (obvious) favoritism toward native-born Americans. This can also be described as a hatred for immigrants.
How did most immigrants travel to America? Steamship.
What is a "Bird of passage" A person who tends to immigrate temporarily to earn money and then return to their homeland.
The US' annexation of what state resulted in increased Japanese immigration to the West Coast? Hawaii
