What was the role of slavery in the Southern economy? Slavery was profitable.
Name 5 ways a slave resisted slavery. Refusal to obey. Pretending to be sick. Broke tools. Broke rules by learning to read and write. Held back on work.
How did Harriet Tubman and others help slaves reach the North and freedom? They traveled at night, using guides, and hid along the way. (Underground Railroad)
Why were people so outraged at the Supreme Court's decision in the Dred Scott case? The courts said Scott had no rights because African Americans were not citizens.
Why did John Brown lead a raid on Harper's Ferry? He wanted to steal weapons from the army's arsenal and use them to attack slavery owners.
Describe the lifestyle of free African Americans. They lived in cities. They feared being accused of being a runaway slave and being sent to the South. Finding work was difficult.
What problem did the Missouri Compromise solve? It addressed the question of what would happen when new states were formed in regards to slavery vs non slavery.
What led to violence in Kansas in 1854? Congress passed a law letting the people of each territory decide whether to allow slavery. Northerners and Southerners disagreed over the results of the vote.
Lincoln and Stephen Douglas - what were their opinions on slavery? Lincoln opposed slavery. Douglas thought slavery had its place because he believed in state's rights.
