Why was steel important to construction in the 1800s? It made it easier to construct skyscrapers (really tall buildings)
What is a "scab"? A worker who is used to break strikes. Ex: If postal workers strike, a "scab" is a person who delivers the mail during the strike.
What is Social Darwinism? The idea that evolutionary theory (survival of the fittest) applies to society.
Under Social Darwinism, does the government regulate business? NO
Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) a labor Union formed by radical socialists and anarchists. Also called the "Wobblies"- made up of miners, lumberers and cannery and dock workers.
Who was George M. Pullman He built a factory for manufacturing railroad cars and he also built a nearby town for his workers to live.
What did industrial consolidation and trust reduces during the late 1800s? competition
What invention allowed factories to move away from waterways. electricity
What happened at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory A fire occurred and all 146 women who were working there were trapped and died.
What was the Interstate Commerce Act? It established the right of the federal government to supervise Railroad activities and established a 5 member Interstate Commerce Commission. It was meant to lower excessive railroad rates.
