| Imperialism | When a stronger nation takes control over a weaker nation for political, economic and militaristic reasons. |
| Alliance | An agreement to help another country. |
| Central Powers | An alliance of Austria-Hungry, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire. |
| Espionage Act/Sedition Act | Limited the free speech that spoke out against World War I. |
| Lusitania | A British passenger ship sunk by German U-boats. 128 Americans died. Americans felt this was a terrorist attack and used this as a reason to enter World War I. |
| Neutral | Refusing to take sides during a war. |
| Armistice | Cease fire. (Stop fighting) |
| Fourteen Points | Woodrow Wilson's goals for peace after WWI. |
| Militarism | Belief that a nation needs a large military force. / Building up ones military. |
| Archduke Ferdinand | The heir to the Austria-Hungry throne who was shot and killed by a Serbian. His death was the spark that started WWI. |
| Bolshevik (Russian Revolution) | The Russian Tzar was overthrown and killed as Communists took over Russia, and as a result Russia dropped out of WWI. |
| Zimmerman Telegram | The United States discovered a telegram that Germany sent to Mexico, asking them to attack the U.S..P |
| Propaganda | Using the media to promote a certian opinion and influence public opinion. |
| Woodrow Wilson | President during WWI and author of the Fourteen Point peace plan. |
| Treaty of Versailles | The treaty that ended WWI and blamed Germany for the war. This eventually became the cause of WWII. |
| Nationalism | Pride in one's nation. |
| Allied Powers | An alliance of Russia, Serbia, England, France and the United States (1917). |
| Home Front | The country a soldier is defending during a war. |
| U-Boat | Underwater boat/submarine |
| Trench Warfare | A kind of warfare during WWI in which troops huddled in the bottom of ditches and fired artillery and machine guns at each other. |
| League of Nations | Association of nations to protect the independence of member nations. |
