central processing unit (CPU) | where processing of information within the computer takes place.Located inside of the computer body |
control unit | receives and sends instruction signals to the entire computer system in order to tell it what to do |
arithmetic logic unit (ALU) | the sector of the CPU that does mathematical configurations required in various data processing programs |
memory unit | where information is stored |
random access memory (RAM) | a temporary memory designed to obtain new data. Only available when the computer is powered on. |
read-only memory (ROM) | permanent memory internally stored within the system. Used to store instructions installed by manufacturer. Inaccessible to users. |
binary coding system (ASCII) | a code consisting of various zeros and ones |
bit | a binary character that is the smallest piece of binary information |
byte | consists of eight bits and is represented by either one alphabetic or numeric character of information |
megabytes, gigabytes, kilobytes | measurements of how much can be stored in the computer memory |
processor speed | how quickly data moves in and out of the memory. Expressed in megahertz. |
peripheral devices | input information, produce information into a readable form for user, and/or store information for future reference. |
input devices | gives permission for computer to put data into the system |
