| Allied Powers | the 23 countries allied against the Central Powers in WWI and the 49 countries allied against the Axis in the 2nd World War |

| Axis | alliance of Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan and Romania during the 2nd World War |
| Central Powers | alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey during the 1st World War |
| Colony | a land or place settled by people from another country |
| Confederate States of America | the government formed (1861-1865) by the southern states of the United States after they had seceded from the Union |
| Continent | one of the seven great land masses of the world – Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica |
| Empire | a kingdom which has been extended by military might to include countries which were originally independent |
| Globe | a spherical model of the earth or heavens |
| Island | a piece of land, smaller than a continent, entirely surrounded by water |
| Kilometer | a unit of distance measurement equaling 1,000 meters |
| Latitude | the distance of a place on the earth’s surface from the equator as measured in degrees, the equator being 0° latitude and the poles (N or S) being 90° |
| Longitude | the distance between the meridian passing through a given point on the earth’s surface and the poles, measured in degrees. The standard meridian is at Greenwich, England |
| Mile | a unit of distance measurement equaling 1,760 yards |
| NATO | North Atlantic Treaty Organization (April 4, 1949) – an alliance set up by the U.S. in the event of another war or attack on these lands |
| Ocean | the large bodies of salt water which comprise the majority (over 2⁄3) of the earth’s surface |
| Revolution | the overthrow of an established government |
| Scale | a line on a map with marks dividing it to show proportional distance |
| Terrorism | using acts inspiring terror as a method of ruling or of conducting political oppression |
| Union, the | the 23 northern states which opposed the Confederate states in the Civil War (1861-1865) |
| Warsaw Pact | a treaty signed by the U.S.S.R and seven other countries in response to the formation of NATO |
