The late 1800's and the early 1900's saw many Americans inventing wonderful things we take for granted today. |
In the 1880's, Thomas Edison, America's most famous inventor, built and refined the light bulb. |
Edison also invented the record player (phonograph), the movie projector and other small machines. |
In 1903, after years of experimenting, two brothers named Orville and Wilbur Wright, flew the first manned airplane at Kittyhawk, North Carolina. The airplane did not gain popularity until after the beginning of WW1 in 1914. |
Another notable invention was the automobile. The first mass produced affordable car was called the Model T. This little, hardworking car was built by Henry Ford. He produced millions of them using an assembly line so that many could afford them. |
In the late 1800's, Alexander Graham Bell built the first telephone. |
