| Domestic | concerning the internal affairs of a country |
| Magistrate | a judge who has limited authority to hear certain issues |
| Mutinous | refusing to obey the orders of a person in authority |
| Guerilla Warfare | irregular military actions (such as harassment or sabotage) carried out by small independent forces |
| Buffer | a small territory or state between two larger, antagonistic powers and intended to minimize the possibly of conflict between them |
| Siege | a military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling the surrender of those inside |
| Flotilla | a fleet of ships |
| Insurrection | a violent uprising against an authority or government |
| Mercantilism | an economic theory that trade generates wealth and is stimulated by the accumulation of profitable balances, which a government should encourage by means of protectionism |
| Depreciate | to decrease in value |
| Protective Tariffs | taxes placed on imported goods, often to raise prices and thus protect domestic producers |
| Admiralty Courts | courts held outside of the colonies in which they had no jury, held the burden of proof, and were considered guilty until proven innocent |

| Non-importation Agreement | agreement to not import certain goods |
| Duty | a customs tax on the export or import of goods |
| Propaganda | advertisements that tried to promote democracy, national unity, and the integration of immigrants |
| Boycott | a groups organized refusal to have commercial dealings with some organization in protest |
| Mercenary | a professional soldier who serves in foreign army for pay |
| Indictment | a formal written accusation charging someone with a crime |
| Envoy | a messenger or agent sent by a government on official business |
| Rabble | a mass of disorderly and crude common people |
| Arsenal | a place for making or storing weapons and ammunition |
| Hereditary | passed down from generation to generation |
| Privateer | a private vessel temporarily authorized to capture or plunder enemy ships in wartime |
| Graft | taking advantage of ones official position to gain money or property by illegal terms |
| Disestablish | to separate an official state church from its connection with the government |
| Emancipation | antislavery / freeing slaves |
| Chattel | a system of bondage in which as slaves have legal status of property and so can be bought or sold like property |
| Abolitionist | the movement in opposition to slavery, often demanding immediate, uncompensated, emancipation of all slaves |
| Annex | to take over territory and incorporate it into another political entity, a country or state |
| Foreclosure | deprive someone of the right to redeem mortgaged property because the legal payments on the loan have not been kept up |
| Quorum | the minimum number of persons who must be present in a group before it can conduct valid business |
| Bicameral | referring to a legislative body with two houses |
