| Term | Definition |
| Anocracy | A country that is not fully democratic or fully autocratic, but rather displays a mix of the two types |
| Autocracy | A country that is run according to the interests of the ruler rather than the people |
| Boundary | An invisible line that marks the extent of state's territory |
| Compact State | A state in which the distance from the center to any boundary does not vary significantly |
| Cultural Boundary | Boundary that follows the distribution of cultural characteristics such as ethnic or geometric boundaries. |
| Delineation | Drawing the border of a territory on a map |
| Demarcation | A line or wall to show a border. |
| Democracy | A country in which citizens elect leaders and can run for office |
| Elongated State | A state with a long, narrow shape |
| Federal State | An internal organization of a state that allocates most powers to units of local government |
| Fragmented State | A state that includes several discontinuous pieces of territory |
| Frontier | A zone separating two states in which neither state exercises political control |
| Gerrymandering | The process of redrawing legislative boundaries for the purpose of benefiting the party in power |
| Landlocked State | A state that does not have a direct outlet to the sea |
| Perforated State | A state that completely surrounds another one |
| Physical Boundary | Boundaries that coincide with significant features of the natural landscape such as desert, mountain or water features. |
| Prorupted State | An otherwise compact state with a large projecting extension |
| Unitary State | An internal organization of a state that places most power in the hands of central government officials |
| Delimited Boundary | Boundary created for electoral districts, precincts, counties and municipalities |
| Redistricting | The drawing of new electoral district boundary lines in response to population changes. |
| Relic Boundary | Boundary that ceased to function but can still be detected on the cultural landscape (i.e. Berlin Wall) |
| Subsequent Boundary | Boundary drawn after the development of a country. Developed with the evolution of the culture and adjusted as the cultural landscape changes (placed after) - (i.e. West/East Germany-later unified) |
| Antecedent Boundary | Boundary drawn across an area prior to the area becoming substantially populated (i.e. 49th Parallel b/w Canada and USA) |
| Consequent Boundary | Type of Subsequent Boundary - drawn to accommodate existing religious, linguistic, or ethnic differences between countries (resulting in) - (i.e. India/Pakistan) |
| Balance of Power | A condition of roughly equal strength between opposing countries or alliances of countries |
| Terrorism | The systematic use of violence by a group in order to intimidate a population or coerce a government into granting its demands |
| Choke Point | Geographical feature such as a valley or waterway that narrows causing difficulty for passage |
