| Simile | Definition: A comparison of two things using LIKE or AS. Example:The mall was as busy AS a zoo. The mall was LIKE a zoo. |
| Metaphor | Definition: A comparison of two things by saying that one thing is a dissimilar thing. Most of the time using WAS or IS. Example: The mall IS a zoo |
| Hyperbole | Definition: Something that cannot possibly be true Example: After swim my arms weigh a TON. |
| Personification | Definition: giving human qualities to a non-human thing. Example: ... as if the rock had started crying. |
| Idiom | Definition: A group of words whose collective meaning is quite different from their individual, literal meanings. Example: We flipped the house upside down to find the missing snake. |
| Alteration | Definition: The repetition of the same initial consonant sound in a series of words. Example: My sister Sally sat still and strait for seven days. |
| allusion | Definition: a reference to a famous person, place, or thing from a book, history, or a type of art. |
| onomatopoeia | Definition: words whose sounds suggest their meaning |
