| Term | Definition |
| steering column | surrounds and supports the steering shaft. The bottom portion is perforated metal or a wire mesh. It's designed to collapse during a collision. |
| steering shaft assembly | connects the steering wheel to the steering gear. Usually consists of upper and lower shafts |
| steering gear | changes the rotating motion of the steering shaft to a back-and-forth movement of the steering linkage |
| steering linkage | consists of the components that transfer the motion of the steering gear to the vehicle's wheels |
| steering knuckle | the connection between the steering and suspension systems |
| rack-and-pinion steering system | is bolted to the cowl |
| The major components of this assembly include the rack | which is a toothed rod |
| parallelogram steering gear | takes the rotating action of the steering wheel |
| pitman arm | converts the rotation of the sector shaft to a back-and-forth motion and transfers this motion to the rest of the steering linkage |
| center link | a major part of a parallelogram linkage/is moved to the left or right by the pitman arm/supports one end of the center |
| idler arm | a major part of a parallelogram linkage/is bolted the vehicle's frame and moves as the center link pivots/not all parallelogram steering systems have one |
| tie rods | provides connections between the ends of the center link and the steering arms |
| suspension system | isolates the vehicle's body from vibrations caused by the up-and-down movement of wheels |
| springs | are the compressible link between a vehicle's suspension and its body or frame |
| shock absorbers | commonly called shocks |
| MacPherson strut assembly | a self-contained unit that consists of a shock absorber and a coil spring |
| control arms | pivoting suspension components that help maintain alignment of the wheel or axle assembly while permitting needed mmovement |
| ball joints | ball-and-socket joints that allow suspension components to move up and down |
| bushings | allow suspension components to move without transmitting vibration and noise to the vehicle's frame or body |
| strut rods | metal bars that are mounted between a vehicle's body and a control arm |
| stabilizer bar | is connected to links bolted to the two lower control arms and minimizes body roll during turns |
| MacPherson strut front suspension | is found in many front-wheel-drive unibody vehicles/In this system |
| short/long arm suspension (SLA) | has both a lower control arm and an upper control arm |
| solid rear suspension | has a solid rear axle that connects both rear wheels |
| electronic suspension system | keeps the vehicle level during maneuvers |
| race | the surface in the hub that the bearing contacts |
| tire pressure monitoring system | will inform the driver of incorrect tire pressure |
| wheels | the assemblies on which the tires are mounted |
| ride height | the distance between a specified point on the vehicle and the shop floor |
| curb weight | the weight of the vehicle without passengers or cargo |
| tracking | the ability of vehicle's rear wheels to track directly behind the front wheels |
| wheel alignment | involves checking the suspension parts for damage or wear |
| front-end alignment | checks and sets the front wheels only |
| thrust-angle alignment | involves checking to see that the rear wheels follow directly behind the front wheels |
| four-wheel alignment | checks and sets all four wheels to specifications |
| total toe | adding the left and right toe readings together determines this |
| toe | the tire's orientation in relation to vehicle's centerline |
| camber | the inward or outward tilt of the tire when viewed from the front of the vehicle |
| cross camber | the comparison of the camber on the left or right sides of the vehicle |
| steering axis inclination (SAI) | the angle between an imaginary line through the upper and lower ball joints |
| included angle | the sum of the SAI and the camber angle |
| caster angle | the difference between the steering axis and true vertical |
| cross caster | the sum of the left and right caster values |
| setback | the center of the wheel on one side of the vehicle is not directly across from the center wheel on the other side of the vehicle |
| pitman sector shaft | steering/suspension component that moves the pitman arm back and forth |
| trailing arm | in a solid rear suspension |
