| Individual Rights | Rights guaranteed to every person in the United States |
| Checks and Balances | Limits put on each of the 3 branches of government so no one branch has too much power |
| Continental Congress | The group of male leaders from the 13 colonies that were gathering together to establish how to break away from England |
| taxes | An amount of money that a government requires people to pay and is used to pay for things done by the government |
| declaration | A formal statement to declare that you want or need something |
| representation | Having someone act in the place or a person or group |
| Congress | Representatives from different locations gather together in a formal meeting to discuss certain issues or concerns |
| 13 Colonies | Was a group of settlements that became the original states of the USA |
| Revolution | The usually violent attempt by many people to end the rule of one government and start another one |
| colonists | A person who lives in one of the 13 colonies that were established in America |
| boycott | Refuse to buy items out of protest |
| protest | a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something |
| Patriot | a colonist who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against Britain |
| traitor | a person who betrays their country |
| tyrant | a cruel and oppressive ruler |
