| population density | the measure of the average population per square mile |
| carrying capacity | the population a region can support without significant environmental deterioration |
| Agriculture Pop. Density | the number of farmers per area of arable land |
| arable land | land that is able to produce crops |
| Redistricting | the process of redrawing political district lines after each census to reflect the changes in population of a state |
| baby boom | post WWII birth rate spike that lasted from 1945-1965 in the US |
| Dependency Ratio | the ratio of working to non-working members of a society |
| Potential Workforce | the group of population aged 15-64 that is expected to be a society's workforce |
| Total Fertility Rate | the average number of children who would be born per each woman of child bearing age |
| Anti-natalist policies | programs, such as China's one-child policy that try to decrease the number of births due to high populations |
| Pro-natalist policies | programs, such as France's paid maternity leave and free child care that try to encourage more births due to low populations |
| Life Expectancy | the number of years an average person will live; it varies from country to country, and by age, income, race |
| Infant Mortality Rate | the number of children who die before their first birthday |
| Rate of Natural Increase | the rate at which a country's population increases or decreases without the impact of immigration |
