| chromosomes | structures in the center of the cell that carry genes |

| dominant trait | a trait that is visible or rules over the other traits |
| gene | a tiny part of a chromosome that contains genetic information and controls traits |
| heredity | traits passed down from parents to children through genes |
| meiosis | a process that causes a cell to divide its chromosomes to become 4 new cells |
| mitosis | a process that causes a cell to divide its chromosomes to become 2 new cells |
| mutation | a change within a gene or chromosome resulting in a new feature |
| recessive trait | a trait that is hidden |
| traits | specific inherited characteristics such as eye or hair color that a person gets from his/her parents |
