Term | Definition |
voyageur | a workman who performed the physical labor of the fur trade, including transporting beaver pelts and trade good by canoe; uneducated, usually from French Canada |
clerk | a man who managed the day-to-day business at a fur trading post; educated |
fur trader | a term used for a European or American involved in the fur trade; a person who oversaw one or more trading posts; well-educated and usually from a wealthy family. |
partner | an owner of the fur trading company that lived in Europe and ran the business from there; sometimes came to the rendezvous |
rendezvous | an annual summer meeting of people involved in the fur trade |
portage | the place where boats and/or goods are carried overland from one stretch of water to anohter |
pelt | an animal skin with fur on it |
Metis | mixed-race between American Indian women and European fur traders |
profit | the money gained from the sale of a good or service after all the costs are subtracted from the amount received |
resource | a source or supply of a useful material (such as wood, fur, or oil) |
guide | a person hired to help voyageurs and fur traders find their way through unfamiliar lands |
interpreter | a person who translates for people who speak different languages |
hunter | a person (during the fur trade area it was usually a man) who spent most of his time hunting and trapping animals for food and for pelts |
