| Monroe Doctrine | Stated that Europeans were no longer allowed to interfere in affairs of or to colonize Americas |
| “Jacksonian democracy” | term used to refer to fact that common man became more involved in politics during late 1820s and early 1830s |
| Indian Removal Act of 1830 | Forced the resettlement of Native Americans to west of Mississippi |
| Worcester v Georgia (1832) | said Georgia’s laws had no force in Cherokee territory; Jackson wouldn't enforce this |

| Nullification Crisis | this was the result of South Carolina's attempt to cancel the Tariff of 1828--it's an example of the federal government vs. the state governments |
| Marbury v Madison | established judicial review and supremacy of federal law over state law |
| Embargo Act | stopped all trade with all powers in 1808; destroyed US economy, later repealed |
| National Road | the first interstate highway |
| Barbary Wars | conflicts with north African nations over access to Mediterranean trade during Jefferson's presidency |
| War of 1812 | conflict with Britain over shipping and enforcement of Jay's Treaty |
| Treaty of Ghent | ended the War of 1812 |
| John C. Calhoun | proposed "nullification theory" |
| McColluch v Maryland | said federal government was superior to the states, and that states could not tax the federal bank to death |
| Panic of 1837 | economic depression that resulted from the lack of a national bank |
| Seminoles | they refused to move west of the Mississippi and fought wars into the 1840s |
