first continental congress | meeting of delegates from 12 colonies (all except georgia, screw you georgia) held in philadelphia in 1774 in response to the intolerable acts by the british. |
Lexington and Concord | the very first battle of the revolutionary war that was in the massachusetts bay colony in 1775 between the british and colonial americans |
"common sense" | a book written by thomas paine that explained how it did not make sense for a small nation over seas to rule of a bigger nation written in 1776 |
second continental congress | meeting of 13 colonies in 1775-1789 which established many important documents such as; the olive branch petition, neccesity of taking up arms, the deceleration of independence, and the articles of confederation. |
the olive branch petition | a document established at the second continental congress to avoid a full out war with the british (spoiler: it didn't work) |
neccesity of taking up arms | another document established at the second continental congress that gave reason to why there was a need to fight against the britsh oppression |
deceleration of independence | a document officially declaring our freedom from britsh tyrany |
articles of confederation | the very first attempt at trying to establish a constitution in America, that failed at first due to the fact that it couldn't enforce anything or tax |
Loyalist | predominantly in the southern colonies who stayed loyal to the king |
Federalist papers | John Jay, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison's attempt at convincing the American population that the Constitution was better then the Articles of Confederation |
Constitution | After scrapping the Articles of Confederation, this was the law of the land after getting rid of articles. |
"three-fifths compromise" | a compromise that established that every 5 enslaved people equaled to 3 free people |
"the great compromise" | established a bicameral congress that gave power to both big states and little states |
land ordinance of 1785 | made purchasing land easier in un-established land in western land outside of the U.S |
shays rebellion | the tipping point of establishing a constitution that involved rev. war veterans receiving no compensation and protesting against the government, there was a need for a militia, however the government had to power to establish such a thing. |
Battle of Yorktown | the final battle of the revolutionary war that was helped by the french |
