Term | Definition |
charter | Document that permitted colonist to settle on land claimed by their ruler. |
stock | Shares in a company that helped the Virginia Company raise money. |
indentured servant | A person who agrees to work for someone for a certain amount of time in exchange for the cost of the ocean voyage to North America. |
House of Burgesses | First law-making assembly in an English colony. |
Pilgrim | An individual who came to the colonies in search of religious freedom. |
Separatist | People in England that wanted to separate from the Church of England. |
Persecution | Unjust treatments because of ones beliefs. |
Puritan | A group that was in search of religious freedom. They wanted to “purify” or reform the Church of England. |
dissenter | A person whose views differ from those held by most people in the community. |
proprietor | A person who controlled or owned land |
debtor | People who owed money. James Oglethorpe came up with a plan to help this group and colonized Georgia to give them a new life on their own land. |
