Federalism | The principles of the Federalists Party |
Anti-Federalists | A movement that opposed the creation of a stronger U.S. federal government and which later opposed the ratification of the 1787 Constitution |
Separation of Powers | An act of placing the legislative, executive, and judicial powers of government in separate bodies |
Popular Sovereignty | The principle that the authority of a state and its government is created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives |
Checks and Balances | Balancing of power through each separation of power checking every other one. |
Republicanism | The support for the republican party |
Articles of Confederation | The original constitution of the US, ratified in 1781, which was replaced by the US Constitution in 1789. |
1st Amendment | Amendment that guaranteed the basic freedoms of human life. |
2nd Amendment | the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed |
4th Amendment | [t]he right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures |
5th Amendment | No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury |
6th Amendment | guarantees a citizen a speedy trial, a fair jury, an attorney if the accused person wants one, and the chance to confront the witnesses who is accusing the defendant of a crime |
7th Amendment | guarantees a trial by jury in civil lawsuits |
8th Amendment | Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. |
10 Amendment | any power that is not given to the federal government is given to the people or the states |
