Answer File | A text file (.bat) that contains information that Windows requires in order to do an unattended installation |
Batch File | A text file containing a series of OS command (.bat) |
BIOS (basic input/output system) | Firmware that can control much of a computer's input/output functions, such as communication with the keyboard and monitor |
Boot Loader Menu | A startup menu that gives the user the choice of which OS to load, when both are installed on the system, creating a dual boot |
Certificate of Authenticity | A sticker that contains the Windows product key |
Clean Install | Used to install Windows on a new had drive or to overwrite the existing OS and applications when installing Windows on a hard drive that already has Windows |
Compatibility Mode | A group of settings that can be applied to older drivers or applications that might cause them to work using a newer version of Windows than the one the programs were designed to use |
Custom Installation | The option to overwrite the existing OS and applications, producing a clean install of the new OS. |
Deployment Strategy | A procedure to install Windows, device drivers, and applications on a computer, and can include the process to transfer user settings, application settings, and user data files from an old installation to the new one |
Device Driver | Small program on Windows that tells the OS how to communicate with a specific piece of hardware |
Device Manager | The primary Windows tool for managing hardware |
Disc Image | Synonymous with ISO Image |
Diskpart | A windows command to manage hard drives, partitions, and volumes |
Distribution Server | A file server holding Windows setup files |
Distribution Share | The collective files in the installation that include Windows, device drivers, and apps |
Drive Imaging | Making an exact image of a hard drive to replicate a hard drive on another system, or recover from a hard drive crash |
Dual Boot | The ability to boot using either of 2 OSes |
File System | The overall structure that an OS uses to name, store, and organize files on a disk |
GUID Partition Table (GPT) | One of two methods used to organize partitions on a hard drive. Can support 128 partitions and is reccomended for devices 2 TB or larger |
Hard-Link Migration | A method used by USMT that does not copy user files and settings when the source computer and destination computer are the same |
High-Touch using a Standard Image | Strategy to install Windows using a standard image for installation. requires technician on a local computer |
High-Touch with a Retail Media | Strategy to install Windows where all work is done by a technician, they also install drivers and applications afterwards |
Hot-Swappable | The ability to plug or unplug devices without first powering down the system |
Hypervisor | Software that creates and manages virtual machines on a server or on a local computer |
Image Deployment | Installing a standard image on a computer |
In-Place Upgrade | A Windows install that is launched from the desktop, carries forward user settings and apps from the old OS to the new one |
ISO File | see ISO image |
ISO Image | a file format (.iso) that holds an image of all the data stored on an optical disc |
Lite-Touch, High-Volume Deployment | Strategy that uses deployment server on the network to serve up a Windows installation after a technician starts the process on a local computer |
Loadstate | Command (USMT) to copy user settings and data temporarily stored at a safe location to a new computer |
Master Boot Record (MBR) | One of two methods to organize partitions on a HrDr (less than 2TB) |
Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) toolkit | Software that can be used by a system admin from a network location to query hundreds of computers on a single scan to determine if any qualify for Windows upgrade |

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) License | Software license that only manufacturers or builders of personal computers can purchase to be installed only on a computer intended for sale |
Preboot eXecution Environment or Pre-Execution Environment | Programming contained in the UEFI/BIOS code on the motherboard used to start up the computer and search for a server on the network to provide a bootable OS |
Product Activation | The process Microsoft uses to prevent piracy |
Programs and Features | Window within Control Panel that lists installed programs where you can uninstall, change, or repair programs |
Pull Automation | A Windows install requiring a user to start process |
Push Automation | Install where a server pushes the install to start when the user is not likely to be at the computer |
Recovery Partition | Partition on a HrDr that contains a recovery utility and install files |
Remote Network Installation | Automated install where no user intervention is required |
Repair Installation | a reinstall of Windows using the recovery partition |
Scanstate | Command (USMT) to copy user settings and data from an old computer to a safe location |
Secure Boot | UEFI feature that prevents a system from booting up with drivers or OS that are not digitally signed and trusted by the motherboard or manufacturer |
Service Pack | collection of several patches of updates that is installed as a single update to an OS or app |
Setup UEFI/BIOS | used to change motherboard settings |
Solid-State Drive | HrDr with no moving parts |
Standard Image | Image that includes Windows, drivers, and apps that are standard to all the computers that might use it |
Startup UEFI/BIOS | part of UEFI/BIOS responsible for running the computer when it first starts up |
System UEFI/BIOS | UEFI/BIOS firmware on motherboard that is used to control essential devices before an OS is loaded |
Third-Party driver | Drivers that come from manufacturer instead of BIOS or Windows |
UEFI CSM (Compatibility Support Module) Mode | Legacy BIOS in UEFI firmare |
Unattended Installation | Windows install done by storing answers to install ?s in a txt file or answer file so the answers don't have to be typed |
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) | Interface between firmware on the motherboade the improves on BIOS and also manages other settings |

Upgrade Assistant | Software used to find out if a system can be upgraded to Windows 8.1 |
Upgrade Path | qualifying OS required by Windows to perform an in-place upgrade |
User State Migration tool (USMT) | Windows utility allowing form migration of user files and preferences between computers |
Usmtutils | Command (USMT) that provides encryption options and hard-link management |
Virtual Machine (VM) | Software that simulates the hardware of a physical computer |
