Sectionalism | a belief where your sections issues is more important then the others |
Fugitive | a wanted person who escaped from something and is most likely avoiding arrest |
Secede | withdraw from something (union) |
Abstain | stopping yourself from doing or enjoying something |
Popular Sovereignty | government is created and has all political power run by elected people |
Border ruffians | pro-slavery activist who crossed the border of kansas to force acceptence of slavery. |
Arsenal | weapons and military equipment stored by someone |
Secession | withdrawing from something (political state) |
States rights | individual US state holding all the rights and powers rather then a Federal government |
Border state | slave states that bordered the northern free states |
Blockade | selling a place to prevent goods or from people entering or leaving |

Rebel | someone who's in opposition of a rule or leader |
Yankee | person who's from the US |
Blockade runner | vessel that attempts to run into or out of a blockaded port |
Ironclad | something protected with iron |
Casualty | someone killed or injured in a war or accident |
Emancipate | set free from legal restrictions |
Ratify | give or sign a agreement making it official |
Habeas corpus | requiring a judge to the person being arrested to securer persons release, unless lawful grounds are shown |
Draft | introductory version of a piece of writing |
Bounty | amount of money paid for capturing or killing someone or animal |
Greenback | dollar bill |
Inflation | inflating something |
Entrenched | belief established and unlikely to change |
Total war | war that is unrestricted because the laws of war are disregarded. |
