Term | Definition |
Fear of Failure | This is the biggest fear of athletes. However the more the athlete focuses on failing the more likely it is to happen this can lead to negative physiological responses such as tension and freezing or choking. |
Negative Mental State | Anxiety is characterised by worry apprehension, if this increases you performance will suffer, worry over own performance leads to:- loss of confidence |
Loss of Self Confidence | this is caused through worrying that you are not good enough to be successful and leads to:- reduced expectaion of success |
Decreased expectations of Success | Where you feel you are less likely to win or perform skills/tactics successfully. |
Cognitive – psychological | Negative thoughts and worry you experience in situations; they include concentration problems, fear and bad decision making, leading to mistakes and a decrease in performance. Often occurs before the game and alter throughout the game. |
Somatic – physiological | The performer views physiological changes (increase heart rate/body temperature and sweating). If these are seen as negative it has a damaging effect on performance. This is often high before the competition but the reduces, can increase during the game |
Behavioural | This is how you behave in reaction to stress things such as changes in mood (loud become quiet withdrawn) / feeling depressed ( lack of motivation energy) / loss of appetite (don’t want to eat leading to lack of energy). |
Definition of anxiety | A negative emotional state, related to feelings of nervousness or worry. This is usually linked to a feared situation. Possibly where the performer has failed before. It is the negative effect of stress! E.g. penalty kick in rugby |
State anxiety | This is where you are anxious in a particular situation and so can change form moment to moment. E.g. High before the start of a game, lowers when games starts high again when faced with taking a penalty etc. Temporary/Fluctuating Situation Specific |
Trait anxiety | This is the personality part of an individual and predisposes the performer to be anxious in most situations, even those that are not intimidating |
