precedent | something done or said that becomes an example for others to follow |
cabinet | a group of advisors to a president |
bond | certificate that promises to repay borrowed money with interest by a certain date |
uniform | identical; unchanging |
accumulate | to build up or collect |
compromise | a settlement of a dispute or disagreement reached by each side giving up some of what it wants in order to reach an agreement |
impressment | seizing people against their will and forcing them to serve in the military or other public service |
maintain | to keep or uphold |
issue | a subject that people have different views about; to deliver or hand out |
caucus | a meeting of members of a political party to choose candidates for upcoming elections |
alien | a person living in a country who is not a citizen of that country |
sedition | activities aimed at weakening the established government by inciting resistance or rebellion to authority |
nullify | to legally overturn; to cancel |
state's rights | the idea that states should have all powers that the Constitution does not give to the federal government or forbid to the states; theory that individual states are independent and have the right to control their most important affairs |
distinct | clearly different from the others |
resolve | to find a solution; to settle a conflict |
partisan | firmly favoring one party or faction |
