Information Technology | The use of computers, storage, networking, physical device, infrastructure and processes To create store, secure, exchange Electronic data. |
Desktop | First screen you see on your computer. Different on everyone's computer. â¢wallpaper â¢icons â¢task bar â¢window |
Folders | Way to keep similar information. â¢sub folders |
RAM | Random Access Memory â¢computer stores the programs and data it's running ⢠really FAST â¢the more RAM's you have the more it can do ⢠once computer is turned off everything in RAM is gone |
ROM | Read Only Memory â¢firmware cannot be changed or modified or can be with difficulty â¢Firmware= Tied closely to hardware and unlikely to need frequent updates |
WAN | Wide Area Network Spans out to large geographical area (infinite) â¢used for external (phone lines and Internet) |
LAN | Local Area Network Small area â¢house networks, small businesses |
Software | â¢application/ system ⢠program or instructions that tells hardware what to do |
Computer Processing (CPU) | Also known as the microprocessor of the computer Coordinates and controls all parts of the computer and does the actual computing. |

Operating System (system storage) | -most important software -all computers need one -allows you to communicate with computer without speaking it's language -manages memory, processes and all of its software and hardware |
Standalone | -Desktop or Laptop that doesn't need a network or any other device to fonction -applications are loaded onto a hard disk |
Microprocessor | "Brains" -coordinates and Conroe all other parts of the computer -preforms the actual computing (mathematical and logical operations) |
Input | -machine/device that feeds data into a computer |
Output | -Machine capable of showing/representing information from a computer |
Input/Output | Device that transfers data to or from a computer and to or from a peripheral device |
Processing | Manipulation of data by the microprocessor or embedded processor according to instructions by a program or its chip |
Storage | Device in which information is stored |
Software vs. Hardware | Software is the different kinds of programs/operating system a computer uses to fonction. Hardware (peripheral devices) is an external device that connects to your computer. It's the actual machine and its physical components that make up a computer |
World Wide Web | A collection of resources and Hypertext files that can be accessed by either a web browser or web server |
Web browser | A software program that allows you to access the different resources in the WWW |
ISP | Internet service provider Company you connect with to access the internet |
URL | Uniform Resource Locator Address for resource or site that the web browsers use to locate files on the WWW |
HTML | Hypertext Markup Language Uses a limited list of tags that define the general structure of different documents linked together on the WWW |
Hyperlinks | A text or graphic link in HTML. Clicking on one of these will redirect you to another part of either the same document or another website, webpage or resource on the Web. |
Website | A collection of network services that are connected together and exist on the web on a particular server |
Homepage | First page you see when you go onto a website |
Multimedia | Using two or more types of media at the same time Text with sound Images with music Interactive games |
Downlaoding | Adding software or other files to your computer from a remote one |
Plug-In | An add on piece of software that allows you to add the capabilities of a web browser and be able to run multimedia files Microsoft Internet Explorer Firefox |
Streaming Media | A way to watch or listen to multimedia files without downloading them You can listen or watch then seconds after they have been received to your computer from the Web |
Uploading | The opposite of downloading. To broadcast a file from your computer to a remote one |
Mouse | Input A small device that users use to complete one or more actions on their display screen |
Monitor | Output displays the Input typically from a mouse or keyboard and also allows users to open programs and interact with the computer |
Keyboard | Input allows the user to type and complete actions from your keyboard. |
Printer | Output a device linked to your computer used to print text or pictures onto paper |
Light Pen | Input Similar to a mouse, it is a light sensitive detector that allows you to directly point and select objects on a display screen. |
Modem | Input/output a device or program that allows computer to send data over telephone or cable lines |
CD-ROM | Input/Output a type of optical disk that can store large amounts of data. |
Joy-Stick | Input/Output a cursor control device that replaces a mouse when playing video games |
Track Ball | Input is an upside down mouse cursor control device used in many notebook and laptop computers. You roll the ball using you fingers. |
Scanner | Input a device that captures images from photographic prints, posters, magazines for computer editing and display. |
Touch Pad | Input An alternate to a mouse it is also used for pointing on a computer display screen. Usually incorporated into laptops they can also be used with a desktop computer. |
Web Cam | Input A digital camera that's connected to your computer. Sends Live Pictures over the Internet. Many laptops come with them but you can also buy one sepreatley. |
Speakers | Output Their purpose is to produce audio output that can be heard by the listener. Some are designed specifically for computers while others can be used with any type of sound system. |
Microphone | Input is used to project a voice. A device that people sing or speak into. |
Projector | Output a device that uses light and lenses to take an image and project it onto a larger screen or wall. |
Digital Camera | Input/Output records and stores photographic images in a digital form. Also have the ability to capture video or sound. |
USB | Input/Output Also known as a flash drive -is a plug and play portable storage device that uses flash memory. When plugged into a USB port you can add or transfer data onto your computer. |
