Term | Definition |
Social Darwinism | “Survival of the fittest:” the belief that the people who are rich and powerful are there because they proved themselves and deserve to be there, and the same for those who are poor. |
Stock | Shares of ownership in a corporation |
Stock market | The market in which shares of publicly held companies are issued and traded either through exchanges or over-the-counter markets. |
Stockholder/Shareholder | The owner of stock (a piece of a corporation) |
Corporation | A group legally organized to act and to have its own rights separate from those of its members; a company in which the owners hold shares of stock and the firm has a separate legal identity from its owners. |
Monopoly | Dominance in or control of a market for certain goods or services by a single company or combination of companies |
Free Enterprise | An economic system where few restrictions are placed on business activities and ownership and where governments generally have minimal ownership of enterprises in the market place. |
