Term | Definition |
Archaeologist | Scientists who learn by digging up tools, bones, and carvings that tell how people lived longed ago. |
History | A written record of people. |
Prehistoric | A time before there were written records. |
Arrowheads | Sharp stone points on a wooden spear, used for hunting. |
Resources | Natural materials found in the environment. |
Clans | A small group of Indians who lived in the same place. |
Village | Several clans made it up; each had a chief. |
Councils | A meeting of chiefs. This meeting was led by a sachem and they met around a fire. |
Sachem | The chief of all the clans and bands. |
Longhouse | A rectangular building with doors, end to end, and a hole in the roof for venting smoke. This sheltered many families. |
Wampum | Beaded bands or belts used by Native Americans as a form of gift exchange. |
Legend | Stories handed down from one generation to the next generation. |
Slash and burn farming | A process in which men would burn a patch of forest, then women will plant plant corn, beans and squash between the burned stumps. |
Artifact | Objects humans have made in the past. |
Algonquin Groups | A group made up of the Delaware, Mahicans, Montauks, and Wappinger tribes. |
Customs | The usual way of doing things. |
