Last Known Good Configuration | Windows Registry key for the most recent successful Login. |
NTLDR | Program responsible for starting Windows. Also called the Boot Loader. |
OS Boot Record | First sector of the system partition. |
Post (Power On Self Test) | A series of tests used to find out if startup BIOS can communicate correctly with essential hardware components for a successful boot. |
Recovery Console | A lean operating system controlled from the command prompt. Located on the Windows installation disk as well as in the Advanced Boot Options menu |
Recovery Image | Backup of the Windows Volume. |
Soft Boot | Also known as Warm Boot. Involves restarting the computer from within an Operating System. |
System Repair Disc | A disc, created in Windows 7 and newer, which can launch Windows RE. |
Warm Boot | Also known as Soft Boot. Involves restarting the computer from within an Operating System. |
Windows Boot Loader (Winload.exe) | Loads and starts essential Windows processes. |
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) | a lean operating system that can be launched to solve Windows startup problems after other tools available on the advanced option menu have failed. |
