Question | Answer |
Name the structures in the lungs that help gas exchange | Large surface area / thin capillary walls / moist surface / extensive network of blood vessels |
Name the muscle that contract during inspiration | External intercostals muscles diaphragm |
Name the muscles that aid expiration during exercise | Internal intercostal muscles abdominals |
What is tidal volume? | The air breathed in or out per breathe |
How does breating rate increase? | Tidal volume increases by utilizing the expiratory and inspiratory reserve volumes / breathing rate increases |
What is the purpose of residual volume? | Air that remains in the lungs after max expiration and stops lungs from collapsing |
What is the equation for minute ventilation(VE) | VE= Tidal volume x breathing rate |
What happens to minute ventilation during sub maximal exercise? | It will increase then plateau as demand for oxygen is being met by ventilation rate |
What happens to inspiratory reserve volume during exercise | It reduces to allow tidal volume to increase |
What happens to expiratory reserve volume during exercise | It reduces to allow tidal volume to increase |
What sends messages to the brain to increase breathing rate? | Chemoreceptors, proprioceptors and thermoreceptors |
What nerves are used to increase breathing rate | phrenic and intercostal muscles |
What do the accessory muscles do? | Lift the ribcage higher to allow more air to be taken into the lungs |
What do the internal intercostal muscles and abdominals muscle do during exercise? | Contract and pull the ribcage down quickly which allows the frequency of breathing to increase. |
