Term | Definition |
Spreadsheet | present tables of values arranged in rows and columns that can be manipulated mathematically using both basic and complex arithmetic operations and functions. |
Workbook | is the Excel file that stores your information. Each workbook may contain numerous worksheets. |
Worksheet | a single spreadsheet that contains cells organized by rows and columns. |
Workbook Window | the window of a workbook. |
Cell | is the intersection of a row and a column. A cell can contain a label, a numeric value, or a formula. |
Sheet Tab | contains the names of the worksheets in a workbook at the bottom of the working screen. |
Active Worksheet | is the area on the Desktop that is currently being used and which usually contains a file or an application. |
Workspace | space where data can be inputted. |
Columns | are the vertical divisions of a worksheet that are identified by letters. |
Rows | are the horizontal divisions of a worksheet that are identified by numbers. |
Headings | are the gray boxes containing sequential numbers/letters along the left side/top side of the worksheet |
Cell Reference | identifies a particular cell; used in formulas to indicate where a value is stored. |
Name Box | is located on the formula bar, indicates the current address of the active cell or cell range |
Formula Bar | is located under the toolbars at the top of the working screen. It contains the edit line for working with formulas, and provides information regarding cell addresses |
Formula | is an expression entered in a cell that performs numeric calculation, logical comparison, or text string manipulation. |
Relative Reference | the address of a cell based on the relative position of the cell that contains the formula and the cell referred to. |
Absolute Reference | in a formula refers to a specific cell location or range; always points to the location of a specific cell, even if you copy it. |
Mixed Reference | are cell references that combine absolute and relative addressing, making either the row or the column absolute |
Active Cell | contains the insertion point and is identified by a dark border around the cell. Its address is shown in the formula bar. Any action you perform is performed on the active cell. |
