| Secede | To break away from |
| Fort Sumter | Federal fort in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina; the confederate attack on the fort marked the start of the Civil War |
| Confederacy | Alliance of southern states that seceded from the Union over slavery |
| Union | A general term for the United States during the Civil War which also was used to refer to the Northern army. |
| Jefferson Davis | An American politician who served as President of the Confederate States of America for its entire history from 1861 to 1865 during the American Civil War. |
| Robert E. Lee | A former union general that joined the South after Virginia seceded. He was in charge of the Confederate Army, and led it to many victories |
| Ulysses S. Grant | An American general and the eighteenth President of the United States (1869-1877). He achieved international fame as the leading Union general in the American Civil War. |
| Abraham Lincoln | 16th President of the United States saved the Union during the Civil War and emancipated the slaves; was assassinated by Booth (1809-1865) |
| Border States | In the Civil War the states between the North and the South that allowed slavery, but did not join the Confederacy: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri |
| Richmond, Virginia | Capital of the Confederacy |
| Yankees | Nickname granted to soldiers in the Union. |
| Rebels | Another name for the Confederates |
| Johnny Reb | Slang for a Confederate soldier or army during the war. |
| Billy Yank | The personification of the Union. Sort of the opposite of Johnny Reb. |
