Term | Definition |
Allotment | a piece of land deeded by the government to a Native American, as part of the division of tribally held land. |
Barrios | a geographical area constituting a city or town |
Hydraulic Mining | placer mining using a pressurized stream of water. |
Dry Farming | A type of farming practiced in arid areas without irrigation by planting drought-resistant crops and maintaining a fine surface tilth or mulch that protects the natural moisture of the soil from evaporation. |
Nomad | a member of a people having no permanent abode, and who travel from place to place to find fresh pasture for their livestock. |
Hacienda | a dwelling that serves as living quarters for one or more families |
Bonanza farm | were very large farms in the United States performing large-scale operations, mostly growing and harvesting wheat. |
Vigilance Committee | an unauthorized committee of citizens organized for the maintenance of order and the summary punishment of crime in the absence of regular or efficient courts. |
Open Range | govt owned grazing land that ranchers use to feed their herds |
Assimilate | take in (information, ideas, or culture) and understand fully. |
Annuity | a financial product sold by financial institutions that is designed to accept and grow funds from an individual and then, upon annuitization, pay out a stream of payments to the individual at a later point in time. |
Homestead | a house and surrounding land owned by a family — often, it includes a farmhouse. |
Sod buster | a person who operates a farm. |
