| social studies | A study of the social sciences, like poitical science history, sociology, and many others |
| continents | The seven landmasses on Earth. They are Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, and Antarctica |
| ocean | A vast body of salt water. They are the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Antarctica |
| prime meridian | An imaginary line that goes vertical and divides the world into the Western and Eastern hemispheres |
| equator | An imaginary line that goes horizontal and divides the world into the Northern and Southern hemispheres |
| geography | A social sciences that explores mans' relationship with the topographical features of the world |
| compass rose | A design used on maps to indicate the North, South, East, West, points of a compass |
| latitude | An angular distance north or south on the earth's surface, as measured from the equator |
| longitude | An angular distance east or west on the earth's surface, as measured from the prime meridian |
| Oxnard | a city whose coordinates are 34 degrees North, 119 degrees West |
| history | The study of human existence throughout time focusing on important people and civilizations |
| civilization | a large group of people living and working together in a well-organized way, like the Romans |
| ancient | something very, very old, like the pyramids in Egypt |
| basic needs | they are the food, clothing and shelter people need to live. |
