abolitionism | a movement to end slavery |
acid rain | rainfall that results when sulfur produced by factories mixes with moisture in the air |
annex | incorporated territory into an existing political unit, such as a city or country |
apartheid | "apartness" the system of racial segregation in South Africa from the 1950's until 1991 |
appeasement | satisfying demands of dissatisfied powers in an effort to maintain peace and stability |
armistice | a truce or agreement to end fighting |
arms race | building up armies and stores of weapons to keep up with an enemy |
autonomous | self governing |
bioterrorism | the use of biological and chemical weapons in terrorist attacks |
bio warfare | use of disease or poison against civilians and soldiers in war time |
blitzkrieg | German word for "lightning war," a swift and sudden military attack; used by Germans during WWII |
bloc | a group of nations with a common purpose |
bourgeoisie | middle class, including merchants, industrialists, and professional people |
Buddhism | a religion doctrine introduced in northern India in the 6th century B. B. by Siddhartha Gautama, known as Buddha or "Enlightened One" |
budget deficit | the state that exists when a government spends more than it collects in revenue |
