Basic Disk | uses primary partitions, extended partitions, and logical drives to organize data |
Diskpart.exe | command-line tools used to manage disks |
Dynamic Disk | disk w/ unlimited volumes that function like primary partitions on a basic disk. (simple, spanned, striped, mirrored) |
exFAT | intended for large USB drives, not hard drives (involves firmware) |
FAT (File Allocation Table) | partitions up to 4 GB |
FAT32 | partitions up to 32 GB (Windows 7 limitation to prevent Windows performance degradation caused by large FAT32 partitions |
GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) Partition Table (GPT) | first introduced in Vista, you can now use the GPT partition style on x86-based and x64-based Windows 7 computers |
Master Boot Record (MBR) | default partition style for x86-based and x64-based computers; support 4 partition primary (3+1 extend) |
Mirrored Volume | consists of equal space from 2 dynamic disks; 2 identical copies; fault tolerant; only 50% storage |

NTFS | preferred file system for Windows 7; partitions up to 4 TB; security (encryption/permissions) |
Simple Volume | contains space from 1 dynamic drive |
