13th Amendment | Abolished slavery (freed the slaves) |
14th Amendment | Gave African Americans citizenship and equal protection under the law |
15th Amendment | Allowed African Americans to vote (male citizens of all races) |
Black Codes | Laws that denied African Americans many civil rights during Reconstruction |
Freedman’s Bureau | Federal agency that provided schools, hospitals, medical care, etc. to newly freed slaves |
Jim Crow Laws | Laws passed in the South after Reconstruction enforcing segregation |
Reconstruction | Period of rebuilding of the US after the Civil War |
Segregation | Separation of people of different races |
Sharecropping | System of farming in which farmers rent land and pay the landowner with a share of the crops they raise. |
Carpetbaggers | White Northerner who went South for political or economic reasons during Reconstruction |
Scalawags | White Southerner who sympathized with the North during Reconstruction |
Abraham Lincoln | President who led US during Civil War, wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, signed the law to create the Transcontinental Railroad |
Andrew Johnson | Became President after Lincoln was shot/against equal rights for African Americans/impeached |
Amendment | A change or addition to the Constitution that once ratified has the same legal power as the original document. |
