Population | Definition |
NEO-MALTHUSIAN | theory that builds upon Malthus’ thoughts on overpopulation. Takes into count two factors that Malthus did not: population growth in LDC’s, and outstripping of resources other than food |
OVERPOPULATION | The # of people in an area exceeds the capacity of the environment to support life at a decent standard of living |
POPULATION DENSITIES | A measurement of the number of people per givin unit of land |
POPULATION DISTRIBUTIONS | Description of locations on the Earths surface where populations live |
POPULATION EXPLOSION | The rapid growth of the worlds human population during the past century, attended by ever-shorter doubling-times and accelerating rates of increase |
POPULATION PROJECTION | predicts the future population of an area or the world |
POPULATION PYRAMID | A bar graph representing the distribution of population by age and sex |
RATE OF NATURAL INCREASE | How much the population increses compared to natural decreses |
S-CURVE | traces the cyclical movement upwards and downwards in a graph |
SEX RATIO | The ratio of men to women |
STANDARD OF LIVING | refers to the quality and quantity of goods and services available to people and the way they are distributed within a population |
SUSTAINABILITY | providing the best outcomes for human and natural environments both in the present and for the future |
UNDERPOPULATION | it is the opposition to overpopulation and refers to a sharp drop or decrease in a region’s population |
ZERO POPULATION GROWTH | A decline of the total fertility rate to the point where the natural increse rate equals zero |
