| Question | Answer |
| What are the elements of design? | The Elements of Design are: Space, Line, Shape, Form, Texture, & Color. |
| What are the principles of design? | The Principles of Design are: Balance, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Unity |
| What is the principle repetition? | The Principle repetition is when a design is copied or repeated. |
| How does texture affect color? | Texture affects color because smooth surfaces reflect more light than rough surfaces (making them brighter and lighter) and rough surfaces absorb more light(making them look darker and less intense). |
| What do curved lines suggest? | Curved lines add a soft, graceful effect to designs. Too many will make a design busy. Examples: Doorway arches, ruffled curtains, curved furniture. |
| What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | Horizontal balance is when left and right parts are equal. Vertical balance is when top and bottom parts are equal. Radial balance is when elements radiate out from a design. |
| What do diagonal lines suggest? | Diagonal lines suggest action, movement, and excitement. They are overpowering and tiring (use in small amounts). Examples: Staircases, cathedral ceilings, and gable roofs |
| What is space? | Space is The area provided for a particular purpose. Can have 2 dimensions (Floor). Can have 3 dimensions (Room or Dwelling). |
| What are the four types of rhythm? | The four types of rhythm are: Gradation, Radiation, Repetition, & Continuous Line. |
| What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | Asymmetrical balance are parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. Example: Two picture frames the same weight but with different pictures inside. |
| What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? | Horizontal lines lead the eye from left to right, & suggests informality and restfulness. (Sofas and Chests, Room appears wider and shorter). Vertical lines lead the eye up, adding more height, formality, and strength. (Tall pillars). Room appears taller. |
| What is the golden mean? | The golden mean is a 3 to 5 ratio when dealing with proportion. |
| What is the difference between shape and form? | Shape is a flat or silhouette image with two dimensions, length & width. Form is the outline edges of a three dimensional object. Form consists of three dimensions, Length, width, and depth (height) as well as mass & volume. |
| What are the five types of balance? | The five types of balance are: Asymmetrical, vertical, horizontal, Radial, & symmetrical. |
| What does unity or harmony mean? | Unity/Harmony means when all elements and principles of design work together to create harmony. |
| What are the two things texture involves? | Texture involves how the surface feels to the touch and how it appears to feel. |
| What are the four types of line? | The four types of line are: Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, & Curved. |
| What is proportion? | Proportion means that each of the parts are the right size to belong to the whole. |
| Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | Radial balance suggests excitement or interest. |
| What is symmetrical balance? Example? | Symmetrical Balance is when both parts are identical. Examples: plants, insects or humans. |
| What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | Emphasis is one item or object that stands out and is the focal point in a design. |
| What happens when you use a continuous line? | When you use a continuous line the design creates a continuous line for the eye to follow. |
| What is another name for symmetrical balance? | Another name for symmetrical balance is identical. |
| What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | Another name for asymmetrical balance is non identical. |
| What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | Gradation is when designs increase or decrease in size, and when one element of design changes. Radiation is when lines or designs move out from the center point. |
