Definition
Second Continental Congress   A convention made up of delegates from all of the Thirteen Colonies, they created the continental army and wrote the Olive Branch Petition.

Continental Army   Formed by the Second Continental Congress to fight in the Revolutionary war against Britain.

George Washington   Lead the Continental army, and according to John Adams he 'had great skill and experience as an officer, and great talents and excellent universal character.' Washington was also very tall, exceeding the average height of a man in his time.

Battle of Bunker Hill   Was fought on June 17, 1775, and one of the first battles in the Revolutionary war. It was fought on Breed's Hill, but Bunker Hill played a part as well.

Impose   For something unwelcome or unfamiliar to be accepted or put in place.

Independence   When a nation, country, or state in which it's residents and population have self-government. This can also be true with people, or a group of people and would be referred to as independent.

Policies   A policy is a system of rules/principles used to guide decisions or achieve a certain outcome. Used mainly with government bodies.

Olive Branch Petition   The final attempt made by the colonists to avoid a full out war with Britain. It was made to try and appease King George III and amend things.

Thomas Paine   One of the Founding Fathers, and author of Common Sense. He was also a philosopher and political activist.

Common Sense   A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775 advocating independence from Great Britain.

Declaration of Independence   Written by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence is a statement that the colonists used to declare their freedom from Great Britain.

Thomas Jefferson   A Founding Father who wrote the unedited version of the Declaration of Independence, and was also the third President of the United states.

Natural rights   Rights people have under the natural law, rights you are born with. In the Declaration, life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness are considered to be natural rights.

Fundamental rights   Rights that you demand that the government allow and are not specifically stated in the Constitution.

Independence Day   Another term for the fourth of July. The day our country became independent from Great Britain.
