charter   Document that permitted colonist to settle on land claimed by their ruler.

stock   Shares in a company that helped the Virginia Company raise money.

indentured servant   A person who agrees to work for someone for a certain amount of time in exchange for the cost of the ocean voyage to North America.

House of Burgesses   First law-making assembly in an English colony.

Pilgrim   An individual who came to the colonies in search of religious freedom.

Separatist   People in England that wanted to separate from the Church of England.

Persecution   Unjust treatments because of ones beliefs.

Puritan   A group that was in search of religious freedom. They wanted to “purify” or reform the Church of England.

dissenter   A person whose views differ from those held by most people in the community.

proprietor   A person who controlled or owned land

debtor   People who owed money. James Oglethorpe came up with a plan to help this group and colonized Georgia to give them a new life on their own land.
