New England   States: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island

New England   Geography: These colonies had a rocky coastline with hills and mountains inland. The soil was sandy, therefore farming was difficult.

New England   Climate: The coldest of the three colonial regions because it furthest north. They had moderate summers and long, cold winters.  
🗑
New England   Economy: This region’s economy was largely fishing and logging. Because this region did not have good farmland, these colonies had to import food and use their natural resources like cod, whales, and lumber to trade.

New England   Government: Government leaders in these colonies were religious leaders and outlawed religions different from their own.  
🗑
New England   Culture: Small towns and small family farms. The Puritans that settled here were very religious and society centered around the church. Puritans were not very religiously tolerant.

Middle Colonies   States: New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania  
🗑
Middle Colonies   Geography: This region had rich, fertile soil and a mild climate. Mostly flat land with some wide valleys and swift rivers.

Middle Colonies   Economy: Many colonists farmed wheat and other grains. Known as the “Bread Basket Colonies.” Factories produced iron, paper, textiles, and cloth.

Middle Colonies   Climate: Moderate summers and cold to moderate winters.

Middle Colonies   Government: Government here guaranteed religious tolerance and banned taxation without representation.

Middle Colonies   Culture: Colonists here came from many different European countries. Culture included a mix of different traditions and religions.

Southern Colonies   States: Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia  
🗑
Southern Colonies   Geography: Good soil and flat land. Colonies here were agricultural.

Southern Colonies   Climate: Warmest of the three colonial regions. Hot and humid summers and moderate winters.

Southern Colonies   Economy: Many plantations grew crops including sugar, rice, cotton, indigo, and tobacco. Crops were maintained by slave labor.

Southern Colonies   Government: The land owners of this region held most of the political power.  
🗑
Southern Colonies   Culture: Many wealthy land owners, slaves, and indentured servants. Diverse and unequal society.
