Why did the Southern States decide to secede (leave the Union -USA) and form their own country? WHAT WAS THE LAST STRAW?   Because of "Bleeding Kansas", a political party called Republicans was formed to stop slavery. Their candidate Abraham Lincoln for president won 1860. Fearing Lincoln would abolish slavery, first South Carolina and then others southern states left/seceded

What was the new southern country called and who was president?   The Confederate States of America The Confederate president's name was Jefferson Davis

What battle started the War?   Southern or confederate forces also called rebs, attached a Union fort called Fort Sumter that was in the state of South Carolina.

Who were the leaders of the Union(north) army and the Confederate(south) army   South= Robert E Lee North+ had many leaders, Lincoln kept firing them because of the poor job they did. Finally 2 generals came out. Ulysses S Grant and General William Sherman.

Why was the battle of Antietam (anteetum) so important?   Up to this point the Confederate army won many battles and were moving up to the northern states to attack. This battle killed more men in a single day than in any war in history. The Union won this battle and protected the north.

What was the Emancipation Proclamation? And when was it given?   A document written by President Lincoln that freed any slave WHO LIVED IN CONFEDERATE STATES ONLY.There was still slavery in some northern and border states. Lincoln delivered this speech after the battle of Antietam as a way to motivate people to fight.

What was the battle of Gettysburg? and why was it so important?   It was a battle to stop the south from entering Pa to capture Washington DC. The Union/ North won. It was the turning point of the war because many confederates died and the south would never win any major battles after they lost this one.

How did the Civil War end?   Grant took control of the Mississippi River and cut the south in 2. While General Sherman swept across the south slashing and burning EVERYTHING, animals, food, railroad tracks (melted them). Finally,General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House.
